Don’t Let THIS Be You….
Went on a three hour mountain bike ride today in a popular state park. Noticed something odd. Our group of eight riders was friendly and everyone of us said “hi” to the other bikers on the trail. Only about half said hi back.
I thought that was strange. Especially from the solo rider. Here’s a guy out in the woods by himself. If we found him laid out on a pile of rocks we’d help him out. But, he dosen’t even say a simply hi to folks he passes on the trail.
Now, a while back, I backpacked the ‘Grand Canyon of Penn.” with my buddy – a thirty mile trip. On the way my friend and I met a bunch of people. Getting ready for the trip, we hiked a bunch on the Appalachian Trial near home. Every time we saw someone we said hi. ALL of them said hi back. ALL OF THEM….
I wonder why that is. Maybe because they are hiking and slower so you can’t really ignore each other? Maybe because hikers are different? Maybe because people don’t really “competition” hike but competition bike?
Backpacking in Pennsylvania we came across a trail runner. HE SAID HI. He could have been training for a race but he said hi. I’ve been in mountain bike races as a competitor and said hi to people on the trail/race course out for a walk.
What’s the deal here? Why are ’some’ mountain bike riders so rude not to utter one simple sylable? Hi.
Whatever your sport, don’t let this be you. Everyone outside needs to stick together. You never know who will carry you out of the woods, drag you out of the surf or share a freeze dried meal with you…..
